From Kubatur to Chief Minister: The Inspiring Rise of S. Bangarappa

A heartfelt look at the early journey of Sarekoppa Bangarappa, former Chief Minister of Karnataka. Born on 26 October 1933 in Kubatur village, Soraba Taluk, Shimoga district, he came from a humble background in the Deevaru-Idiga community.

His education shaped his vision: he earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Law degree, and a Diploma in Social Science, which laid the foundation for his empathetic and people-centered politics.

Bangarappa’s political journey began with his first electoral win in 1967, when he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Soraba. Over the following decades, he served in multiple key roles—ranging from Home Minister and Cabinet Minister to Leader of the Opposition—before eventually becoming the Chief Minister of Karnataka (1990–1992).

Favored by many for his warmth and accessibility, he earned the nickname “Solillada Saradara,” meaning “a leader who cannot be defeated.” He was known for his unwavering connection with the people, which helped him retain his seat over seven terms.
